Legend and history
« Douarnenez’s history begins with two great Western legends: the famous romance between Tristan and Yseult and the legend of a city engulfed by the sea, the Ville d’Ys. At the most inland point on the bay’s shoreline, said to be the most beautiful in the world, men have been living for perhaps 150,000 years. Over the centuries they have left the imprint of an incredible maritime epic for this unique part of the world. In the Roman era, a thriving town prospered around a fish salting and export industry. In Medieval times, export of sailcloth all over Europe gave rise to a «new golden age». And then in the 19th century, canning factories brought Douarnenez it’s name as an industrial center for the Finistère. The port of the «lords of the sea» has a highly original character inspiring the loyalty of its inhabitants, who cherish its maritime history, and welcome you to share it with them. » Jean-Michel Le Boulanger
